Handmade gifts for him: ideas that get used

By Velor · · 4 min read

If he says he doesn't need anything, a well-made handmade piece is often the answer: something practical he will use every day, made by a person rather than a factory.

1. Gifts that get used

The best handmade gifts for someone who is hard to buy for are useful ones:

  • leather: a wallet, card holder, belt or key fob that softens with use
  • wood: a chopping or serving board, a carved bowl, or a desk piece
  • metal: a hand-forged bottle opener, hook or kitchen tool
  • ceramics: a big hand-thrown mug he will reach for every morning
  • outdoors: handmade gear for the walks, fishing trips or garden he already loves

2. How to check quality

A good listing tells you exactly what a piece is made of. Look for:

  • leather: whether it's full-grain or another type, and how it's stitched (hand-stitched seams last a long time)
  • wood: the type of wood and the finish (food-safe oil for anything used with food)
  • metal: what the metal is and how it's finished, so it won't rust or mark
  • ceramics: whether it's food safe and dishwasher or microwave safe

If any of that is missing, ask the maker. A maker who knows their craft will be happy to explain.

3. Personalise it

Initials on a wallet or a name burned into a board turns a good gift into his gift. Agree the exact lettering in writing before you pay, and allow extra making time. Personalised items are often not returnable unless faulty, so check first.

4. Order in good time

Many handmade pieces are made in small batches or to order. Check the making time and delivery estimate in the listing, and if it's for a set date, message the maker to ask whether it can arrive in time.
