Handmade Christmas gifts: how to choose one they will keep
A handmade Christmas gift is one nobody else will unwrap. Someone made it by hand, and it usually comes with a story you can pass on. Here is how to choose one well, and how to make sure it arrives in time.
1. Start with the person, not the price
Think about what they already use and love every day:
- a tea or coffee drinker: a hand-thrown mug, cup or teapot
- someone who loves their home: a bowl, a woven throw, a basket or a carved piece of wood
- someone who wears jewellery daily: a simple handmade necklace, ring or pair of earrings in the metal they already wear
- someone practical: a leather wallet, a belt, or a well-made kitchen tool
A gift that fits into their day gets used, and a gift that gets used gets remembered.
2. Order early, and check each listing
Handmade pieces are often made in small batches or to order, and some makers post from further away. Before you buy:
- check the making time and the delivery estimate in the listing
- if it's for a set date, message the maker and ask whether it can arrive in time
- order as early as you can; makers get busy in December too
Velor never promises a delivery date on a maker's behalf, so the maker's own answer is the one to go by.
3. Personalised gifts need extra time
Many makers can add a name, a date or a different colour. If you want a personalised piece:
- agree the exact wording and spelling in writing before you pay
- ask how long it will take
- check the returns position first: personalised items are often not returnable unless they are faulty
4. Choose pieces that travel well
If the gift is going straight to someone else, or a long way, think about how it will travel. Ceramics and glass are fine when packed properly, so it's worth asking the maker how they pack. Jewellery, leather, textiles and woodwork usually travel easily.
5. Ask the maker for the story
This is the best part of buying handmade. Ask how the piece was made, how long it took, or what inspired it. Write a line of that on the gift tag and the present means more.
6. Think about care
Ask how to look after the piece: whether a mug is dishwasher safe, how to oil a wooden board, how to store silver. Passing that on is a thoughtful touch.
